What is the Code of Conduct and Business Principles?

The Code of Conduct and Business Principles is a global document that explains how Smith & Nephew and its employees are expected to do business in accordance with the law and company values.

Your managers and your local compliance officer will be able to help you understand the implications of the Code in your daily work. This website will give you information on the Global Compliance Programme.

We already have a Code of Conduct and Business Principles for our business. How does this global Code work with this?

This enhanced global Code replaces all other Codes across the business. Local Codes of Conduct and related policies and procedures have been made consistent with this enhanced global Code.

How does the global Code account for local differences in the law and customs?

The global Code of Conduct and Business Principles is intended to cover the whole of the business. The company recognises that there are minor variations based on local law that will be covered in local operating procedures.

Who is responsible for compliance in my business?

Everyone is responsible for ensuring that they and their colleagues work in accordance with the Code of Conduct and Business Principles.  A list of contacts is available showing those individuals who have specific roles within our company to help us maintain compliance.

What happens if I fail the test on the Code of Conduct and Business Principles?

You will be able to retake the test.  All the answers are provided in the Code of Conduct and Business Principles.  Additional training will be provided if you are having difficulty.  Contact your manager as soon as possible if you are having problems.

Who do I go to if I need to discuss or report a compliance event or problem? Who can I talk to if I think that someone else in breaking the Code?

Your manager, a more senior manager, your compliance officer, legal counsel or here.

What happens if I don't agree with the Code? What happens if I cannot work as the Code says?

The Code sets forth our basic values. If you do not share them, you may not belong at Smith & Nephew. If you have a concern please contact your manager or compliance officer. Fear of losing sales is not a legitimate reason for not signing the Code.

What happens if I miss compliance training deadlines?

Ample time is provided to complete all compliance training requirements. You are responsible for ensuring that you do not miss the deadline. 

If an employee willfully misses the deadline then this will be regarded as gross misconduct and will be dealt with in accordance with our standard disciplinary processes.  This may lead to dismissal.

If you think that this may happen then you must contact your manager as soon as possible. Your manager will do everything possible to help you meet the deadline.
